Peer Review Week (PRW) 2025 is scheduled to take place from September 15–19, with the theme “Rethinking Peer Review in the AI Era.” This global event will explore the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on the peer review process, academic integrity, and the broader scholarly publishing ecosystem.
Chosen through a community-driven selection process involving nearly 900 votes worldwide, the 2025 theme reflects a growing interest in examining how AI can both enhance and challenge traditional peer review practices. Asia led in participation, with strong engagement from Africa, Europe, the Americas, and Oceania, underscoring the global significance of this topic.
Maryam Sayab, Co-Chair of the PRW Steering Committee, emphasized the theme’s urgency, noting the importance of critically assessing how AI intersects with transparency, reviewer accountability, and research ethics. “Our goal is to empower the scholarly community to think critically and creatively about how peer review should evolve in this new technological era,” she said.
The week-long celebration will feature a wide range of online activities, including webinars, expert panels, blog posts, videos, and workshops. These sessions aim to foster global dialogue around key questions, such as:
- How can AI support integrity and transparency in peer review?
- What ethical standards should govern AI use in scholarly evaluations?
- Which aspects of peer review must remain fundamentally human?
As AI continues to shape the editorial workflow—from reviewer selection to plagiarism detection—PRW 2025 calls on researchers, editors, publishers, librarians, and technologists to collaboratively reimagine peer review. “We’re no longer debating whether AI will be used; we’re now focused on how it should be used responsibly,” said Co-Chair Roohi Ghosh.
The PRW Steering Committee invites all stakeholders in academia and publishing to participate by attending events, sharing perspectives, or hosting discussions. “Peer Review Week is not just a celebration—it’s a movement to guide the future of peer review with vision, ethics, and global collaboration,” the committee said in a joint statement.
