University Libraries Secure ‘Read and Publish’ Agreement with Royal Society of Chemistry

The University Libraries have announced a transformative new “read and publish” agreement with the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), effective January 1, 2025. This groundbreaking partnership offers comprehensive subscription access to RSC’s journal portfolio while also enabling Open Access (OA) publishing for corresponding authors affiliated with any University of Nebraska campus.

Under this agreement, Article Processing Charges (APCs) for open-access publishing in RSC journals are fully covered by UNL Libraries, ensuring authors incur no publication costs. This initiative complements existing Open Access agreements with Wiley, Cambridge University Press, Biochemical Society/Portland Press, Institute of Physics (IOP) Publishing, Microbiology Society, and The Company of Biologists. To date, UNL Libraries have saved authors over $250,000 in APC costs since 2021.

Eligible authors must be affiliated with a University of Nebraska institution to benefit from the APC waiver. Articles published under this agreement will be made openly accessible under CC-BY or CC-BY-NC licenses, allowing authors to retain copyright and maximize the reach of their research. Detailed instructions for authors are available on the RSC website.

In addition to free Open Access publishing, this agreement provides unlimited reading access to RSC journals, enriching the research resources available to faculty, staff, and students.

Beyond RSC journals, UNL authors can further enhance their research visibility by depositing their articles (subject to publisher agreement) in the UNL Libraries Digital Commons repository, also at no cost. For assistance with the repository or more information, contact Sue Gardner ([email protected]) or Linnea Fredrickson ([email protected]).

This partnership underscores the University Libraries’ commitment to advancing open scholarship and reducing financial barriers for researchers. By fostering Open Access opportunities, the University of Nebraska continues to champion global accessibility to scientific knowledge.
